Sunday, October 3rd:

Matt and I got up early and drove to Capalaba (cup-AL-uh-bar) for field service. It was pretty hairy sitting in the drivers seat and watching Matt do the driving. Naturally, we were late for the group and Matt had forgotten how to get there. But no worries - it just gave me more opportunities to spot the strange signage. On the way back we stopped at Clotilde and Nigel's (where Matt had stayed last year). Nigel is constantly cracking jokes in the thickest Aussie slang I've heard so far. Nigel's joke of the day: "Why would you go to an Aborigine's garage sale? - To get your stuff back."

Afterwards we went back to the Gosden's for lunch with just enough time to get to the meeting. Percy Gosden (Marnie's Dad) conducted the Watchtower study, which was great because he already knew my name. It was nice not having to spell it out phonetically every time I gave a comment - something I'm used to doing whenever I visit other congregations. We stood near the entrance and were helplessly introduced to everyone.

Dave assembled his "rent-a-crowd" (as everyone calls it) and we all met at a great Turkish restaurant in downtown Brisbane. We met lots of nice kids there, including a friend of Jonathan Bogert. They were all envious that we were going down to see Adalaide and Melbourne. (Its like how we never go see the statue of liberty until someone from out of town visits us... Only in this case, its more like a New Yorker taking a visitor to D.C. and Chicago.) I was told to order "the special" but started getting worried when the sister next to me ordered a baby octopus salad. All was well, though. What I had was awsome - tasted like a gyro that'd been chopped up and tossed together, bread and all. Matt, Marnie, Ness, Joel and I took a walk along the riverside nearby. It was awsome with the lights reflecting off the water and all sorts of winding paths through bamboo and palm trees and such. Later, we met up with the rent-a-crowd again at the top of a lookout point overlooking Brisbane city. The moon was low and reddish looking. There were lights all around in every direction - the camera just cant capture it nomatter how still I hold it.
