Thursday, October 14th:

Matt woke up to a wet bed. The torrential rain last night crept in through the vent above his bed. We had a gormet breakfast, laughing ourselves silly over our new lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody. Here's some pics of our favorite cabin so far:

We hit the road and soon turned off to see what the "Treetop Walk" was all about. I imagined something like an Ewok village with rope bridges, tree houses, and swinging vines, but the bridges were made of steel, and stood out bright against the trees. It was pretty cool, looking down from that height to the forrest floor. At one point, we climbed up an endless spiral staircase to a lookout tower 45 meters above the forrest floor. There were these gigantic jurassic looking ferns overtaking the ground level greenery.

From there it was on to Apollo Bay. The Great Ocean Road is very hard to travel without stopping literally every 10 minutes to get out. And even so, your neck hurt from constantly gazing out the window at the cliffs and rocks and breaking waves. The road was so incredibly winding that it was hard to do anything but watch the road meander in and out, cut into the cliff face, sometimes with no railing. We couldn't help stopping at one point to hurl rocks as far as we could. Only Joel was able to get his to reach the water just beyond the rocks. A small, nearly imperceptible splash followed in the churning surf.

We saw a lighthouse from the road, and drove up to investigate closer. Overlooking Split Point, we wandered around from lookout point to lookout point just taking in the scenery.

On the way to Geelong (juh-LONG) where Melanie and Sam (just married) have a house, we passed by Bells Beach, the surfing capital of the world. This is where they host the world championship surfing contests. The waves were covered in tiny black surfing dots, dwarfing the surfers. We looked for sharks, but didn't see any. The entire road hugged the coast, and looked like this the whole way. It was unbelievable. We just soaked it in, knowing we'd never get to do this again any time soon.

Melanie and Sam took us in and fed us pizza. We watched Shrek 2 and fell asleep wherever there was room. The days are so packed with stuff to see and do - I can't believe how many pictures there are. So far, over 500 are posted, and there are 200 more that didn't make the cut.
