Friday, October 15th:

It poured last night, and this morning it looked like it would be a sunny day to tour Melbourne. We took a train in from Geelong, and rode the free tram around the city loop. They have a huge flea-market style shopping center called Queen Victoria Market. It reminded me of a cross between Canal Street in NY and Trader's Village in Houston. It just went on for miles in all directions. We spent more time looking for each other then at things to buy. We found a lolly (candy) shop where they made their own, right in front of the crowd. They made all these intricate shapes and colors into a large cylinder of soft sugar roughly a foot in diameter and three feet long. Then they stretched it out into long thin tube and sectioned it off. It was neat to watch, and they gave out free samples. The cross sections of the candies had pictures of the fruit flavors, and even letters and shapes.

As we left the market, it was pouring again. A huge double rainbow filled the sky from one end of the city to the other. We headed off to see the Art Museum on the south end of town. They say it was built in the exact proportions of Noah's Ark, and even had a row of windows along the top. We couldn't go inside because it was closed by the time we got there, but we did get to see the sunset from the bridge, even though it was still raining.
