Wednesday, July 27th:
Today we spent the entire day at Cedar Point, famous for the 1922 convention, but perhaps even more famous as the home of 4 of the top ten roller coasters in the world! That includes the top two wooden coasters, and the number one steel coaster as well. If you visit the Cedar Point webstite, take a look at some of the coasters we went on: "The Millenium Force" dwarfed everthing on the planet when it opened in 2000, at 310 feet, and is still considered the best coaster ever. Though, now, the "Top Thrill Dragster" here at Cedar Point, and the "Kingda-Ka" at Six-Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, hold the record at 420 feet and 456 feet high. But as intense as these new rides are, they are steam driven, and only last less than a minute. Compare that the the nearly 1.5 hour wait to get on, and I'll take the gravity driven Millenium Force any day. Though, I have to admit, having my face pressed back against my skull as we accellerated from zero to 120mph in only four seconds was unlike any experience I've ever had. And then to see nothing but blue sky ahead with the earth falling away below followed by a vertical twisting drop as the earth spins around getting closer and closer... Heh.. you've got to try this. I recommend getting to the park early, and "running with the bulls" as the crowd races to the unusually short lines. Of course it rained all morning till about noon, but that didn't stop us. We just brought our umbrellas and stuck it out with the other hard-core coaster enthusiasts, glad that the rain scared so many people away from the park today, and even gladder that they didn't shut down the coasters in the rain. We had to wait for the wooden coasters to dry off before they let us on, but the Millenium Force was open as soon as we got there. Afterward, we felt exhilerated, but wished we had brought goggles or something. Imagine driving your car at 90mph through the rain, and sticking your face out the window. We got PELTED with seemingly harmless drops of water. We met this guy on the line who was riding this coaster for the 1,003rd time! He showed us his official "American Coaster Enthusiats" rain poncho, and a little piece of paper with 1002 tick marks on it... After listening to him explain how the fifth row right-hand side seat had by far the most air time, in slightly slurred and broken speech, we wondered if all that roller coaster riding had affected him at all. They seemed to be plagued with mechanical problems today. After a nutritious peanut butter and jelly lunch, we waited on one line for "The Raptor" for nearly an hour. As we stepped up to the turnstyles, only a few feet from the end of the line, Matt said, exhaustedly, "Man, I never thought we'd never get here." To which I quickly, and stupidly replied, "We're not there yet, you know. Don't jinx it!". And sure enough, as we stepped up to the ride nearly about to get on, they announced that the ride will be down for mechanical reasons for an unknown ammount of time. GAH! We stuck it out and waited there for another half hour or so, but it soon became apparent that we were just wasting our time. Dejectedly, we left the line and headed for the first thing we saw - "The Wicked Twister," only to have it shut down too, the momment we stepped onto the line! All in all it was an awsome day. We had a blast but are tired of having fun now.
