Saturday, July 30th:
One of the forums they had today was called, "Flying Spaceship One" given by Burt Rutan (the designer), and the two test pilots (civillian astronauts, now). Of course, I think that's the greatest thing in the world, so I dragged my parents and my brother over to the big tent they'd set up, and sat listening intently as the deep rumble of radial engines overhead washed out all the sound. They talked about all the technical challenges they had to overcome, and some aerodymamic glitches, rolling uncontrollably at mach 2. The pilot took his hand off the trim adjustment, and reached over to the kill switch to shut down the engine. But he remembered something Burt Rutan had told him: don't shut it down if it's still pointing up! He rode it out, and ended up making history. The line for autographs after the show was just as historic in length. After the show we found a strange back-woods steak-house eight miles away from town in the center of a cornfield.
